Venous Insufficiency

Men Are at Risk for Venous Insufficiency Too

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is the term used when your leg veins don’t pump blood efficiently, because of weak walls and/or damaged valves. Over time, this causes veins to dilate and become varicose, resulting in swelling, skin texture changes and discoloration. Ulceration is also possible over time. If you are developing prominent varicosities, swelling or color changes at the ankle, this process is occurring.

How Do You Treat These Vein Disease Symptoms and Signs?

Treating uncomfortable vein disease symptoms, like aching and heaviness, requires an understanding of the circulatory system. To return blood from your legs to the heart, veins rely on one-way valves to keep the flow going toward the heart. The calf muscles act as the pump. When working properly, these valves keep flow progressing toward the heart.

Watch our What is Vein Disease video for more information.

If valves malfunction, your body no longer pumps blood efficiently against gravity. The blood pools in the lower legs, causing signs of damage, such as swelling and eventually tissue damage. Other vein disease signs include dryness, itching, color changes and eventually ulceration.

Our experienced vein disease professionals can help identify the causes of your venous insufficiency and find the best treatment for you.
